Membership requires direct descent from one of the Mayflower passengers. To become a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) you will submit your documentation to a state society historian, and they will complete your application form. Once approved, you become a member of both the state society and the general society. You do not have to be a New Mexico resident to become a member of our society.
Compile the names of each couple in ever generation between you and your Mayflower passenger using vital records, church record, wills, probate records, sourced genealogies, town histories, etc. Start with documents your family owns such as birth, marriage and death certificates. Move backwards in time.
You can use databases such as www.familysearch.org to gather acceptable documentation. When submitting documentation to the historian provide birth, marriage and death records (or approved substitutes) of each ancestor and spouse. Electronic and non-certified copies are acceptable.
GSMD hosts a growing Patriots to Passengers project at www.themayflowersociety.org/genealogy/patriots-to-passengers/ It shows the lines back in time for more than 4,000 Revolutionary War Patriots who descended from Mayflower passengers. Their lines are often pre-approved and will not require additional documentation.
GSMD has published a series of books, Mayflower Families Through Five Generations (Silver Books), that documents the descendants of Mayflower passengers. In many cases these generations are pre-approved and will not require additional documentation.
Also on GSMD consider using Mayflower Lineage Match, another valuable time-saver. For a $75 fee, their genealogical team will verify whether your proposed lineage aligns with a previously approved application or Silver Book entry. Previously approved generations that meet current standards will not require re-proving by applicants. Learn more under the Research tab at www.themayflowersociety.org
NM's Historian Tiffani Loiacono tiffaniloiacono2@gmail.com can provide guidance and will prepare your application for submission to GSMD but cannot research your line for you. GSMD offers different levels of fee-based research assistance. Learn more
